 Advocate Bikram Sidhu, a Social Worker in Ludhiana pays tribute to the Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Udham Singh Ji on their birth anniversary by elaborating their biography.

December 26 denotes the birth anniversary of Shaheed Udham Singh. He was born on December 26, 1899, at Sunam in the Sangrur area of Punjab, Udham Singh was an extraordinary political dissident and progressive. Udham Singh was a Freedom Fighter who had a place with the Gadar Party. His father was a farmer and also worked as the railway crossing watchman in the village of Upali. After the demise of his father, Udham Singh and his senior sibling Mukta Singh was raised by Central Khalsa Orphanage Putlighar in Amritsar. In the year 1918, Udham Singh finished his Matriculation Examination and left the shelter in the year 1919. 


On April 10, 1919, heads of the Indian National Congress were captured under the Rowlatt Act.

On April 13, 1919, a group of British soldiers under the leadership of Reginald Dyer started shooting at unarmed regular citizens partaking in a quiet dissent at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar; official figures estimated the death toll at 379 and 1,200 injured, however, neighborhood occupants guarantee the loss figure was far higher. 


The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is viewed as an image of pilgrim pitilessness and a defining moment in the Indian opportunity battle, with its center moving from looking for better conditions for the local populace to full autonomy. 


O'Dwyer was the lieutenant legislative head of Punjab at the time of the incident. He had supported Reginald Dyer's activity at Jallianwala Bagh, clarifying that he felt Dyer's requests to take shots at the groups was not right. Angered by the incident, Udham Singh killed Michael O' Dwyer in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh slaughter in Amritsar in 1919. 


Singh was hence attempted and indicted for murder and hanged in July 1940.
