India is celebrating its 73rd Army Day today. Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year to respect the army soldiers of the nation, who have set the best illustration of selfless service and brotherhood and more than anything the affection for the country.
Indian Army Day is celebrated each year at all Army Command headquarters.
On the occasion of the 73rd Indian Army Day, the Indian Arm will arrange a marathon 'Vijay Run' to honor Swarnim Vijay Varsh festivities of India's resounding victory over Pakistan in 1971.
The country also honors the courage of the bravehearts on this day and express gratitude toward them for their selfless service.
While celebrations take place across the country, the fundamental Army Day parade is conducted in Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi cantonment. Heroism awards and Sena medals are also awarded on this day. In 2020, 15 warriors were given bravery awards. Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra awardees participate in the Army Day march each year. Military hardware, various contingents, and a battle display are essential for the parade. In 2020, Captain Tania Shergill turned into the primary female officer to command an Army Day march.
History of Army Day
Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year. It was on this date in 1949, the Indian Army got its first army chief Lieutenant General KM Cariappa. General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa was designated as Commander-in-Chief of Indian Army on January 15, 1949. He was the first Indian to be delegated as Commander-in-Chief. He took over the reins of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.
He adopted the motto 'Jail Hindi' which signifies 'Victory of India'.
He is also one of just two Indian Army officers to hold the Five-star rank of Field Marshal; the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
Cariappa led Indian powers on the Western Front during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.
Kodandera "Kipper" Madappa Carriappa took over from the British as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in independent India. He is one of the only two individuals who got the title of Field Marshal of India. He played an important role for the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.
A native of Karnataka, Gen Cariappa's army career crossed over three decades. He won numerous awards when he led the Eastern and Western Commands of the military. He was one of the first Indians to receive training at the Imperial Defense College in Camberley, UK.
After freedom, numerous administrative troubles began emerging in the country and afterward the Army needed to come forward to control the situation. The President of the Indian Army was still of British beginning. On January 15, 1949, Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa turned into the first Indian Army chief of India. There were around 2 lakh soldiers in the army at that moment. Army Day was celebrated on 15th January every year since KM Cariappa was made army chief.
On 15th January every year, there are parades of soldiers and various regiments and tableaux are drawn. Army Day is celebrated with extraordinary eagerness every year. Cariappa was the first officer who was given the position of Field Marshal. The Indian Army was commanded in the Indo-Pak War in 1947. Cariappa retired in the year 1953 and died at 94 years in 1993.
